Parashurama Dwadashi: Significance and Importance

Parashuram Dwadasi is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Parashuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the dwadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaishakha.

Designated Mahurat for 2025

For the year 2025, Parashuram Dwadasi is scheduled to be observed on Thursday, May 8th. The dwadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha will begin on Wednesday, May 7th at 11:59 PM and will conclude on Friday, May 9th at 2:26 AM. The auspicious muhurat for puja and observing the fast during this dwadashi tithi on Thursday, May 8th is noted to be from 8:59 AM to 12:18 PM.

Ritual Procedure

On the day of Parashuram Dwadasi, devotees typically begin the day with a bath before sunrise and make a resolution to observe the fast with sincerity. Many choose to observe a strict fast, abstaining from all food and even water, while others may opt for a fruit-based or satvik diet, avoiding grains and pulses.

The primary ritual involves offering prayers and performing puja dedicated to Lord Parashuram. An image or idol of Lord Parashuram is often placed on a clean altar, adorned with yellow flowers, sandalwood paste, and vermillion. Offerings of yellow sweets, fruits, and basil leaves are made. Devotees chant mantras dedicated to Lord Parashuram, such as “Om Namo Bhagavate Parashuramaya” or the Parashuram Gayatri Mantra.

Visiting temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Lord Parashuram is considered auspicious. Charity and donations, especially to Brahmins and the needy, are also meritorious activities performed on this day. The fast is typically broken the next day after performing the morning rituals and offering prayers.
