For millennia, the Ganga has held an unparalleled position in Hinduism. It is personified as the goddess Ganga, often depicted riding her vahana , the Makara, and holding a water pot, a rosary, and sometimes a lotus. Her presence permeates countless scriptures, hymns, and rituals, making her an integral part of daily life and major religious events.
The origin of the Ganga is steeped in captivating mythology. The most popular narrative involves King Bhagiratha, a descendant of the Suryavanshi dynasty. His ancestors had been reduced to ashes by the curse of the sage Kapila. To grant them salvation, Bhagiratha undertook severe penance for centuries, praying to Goddess Ganga to descend from the heavens to Earth and purify their ashes with her sacred waters.
Pleased with his devotion, Ganga agreed, but her immense force threatened to shatter the Earth. Lord Shiva, the benevolent deity, intervened and offered his matted hair to cushion her descent. Ganga flowed through his tangled locks, her mighty stream fragmented into smaller, manageable currents before gracefully landing on Earth. Hence, she is also known as Bhagirathi and is often associated with Lord Shiva.
