Masik Karthigai is a monthly Hindu festival, particularly significant for Tamil Hindus, that occurs on the day when the Karthigai Nakshatra (star) falls. It is primarily dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga (Kartikeya), with a focus on the divine light and energy associated with them. The celebration stems from legends where Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite flame to resolve a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu, and also honors the birth of Lord Muruga who emerged from Lord Shiva’s third eye as six sparks that were nurtured by the six Karthigai stars (Pleiades).
